The common characteristic across all industries in the current world is the active dynamism and the rate at which technological advancement continues to take control in every field. In light of this, it takes just a few years for a kind of technology to be faced off by a newer version and this is the common trend across all industrial sectors. The world of computer games has not been left behind in this wave of rampant technological advancement. With the emergence of the first generation of computer games happening in the early 1970s, several generations have since then arose and been faced off until the current one.
Currently, computer games are in the eighth generation and there is much technological design to fancy in them (TV Tropes, 2013). Arriving at this point, the world of computer games has experienced tremendous changes, especially in terms of the types of games, the design, as well as the gaming platforms. The essence of having computer games is experiencing the fun in playing them. In light of this, there are many devices that have been developed over the years to enhance the interaction between the games and the players. This objective of delivering quality and enjoyable computer gaming is now being enjoyed in the eighth generation (TV Tropes, 2013). The main features of this generation are specifically the gaming consoles or platforms, as well as the different games available in each.
In this generation, the major competing platforms in console computer games are Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. These platforms are products of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, respectively. These platforms have specific features to offer. Wii U incorporates an inbuilt 6.2 inch LCD screen which incorporates an integrated resistive touch-screen. The PlayStation 4 on the other hand comes with a touchpad controller, a move to match the touch-screen in Wii U, and two-point capacitive touch-pad. The Xbox One, despite having the old control system, incorporates exotic features such allowing its users extra non-gaming experiences such as surfing the internet or watching films (Ebay, 2013).
Each of these consoles has a list supported games that bear a common theme for competition purposes. Some of the common games characterizing the eighth generation include among the following. Under the Wii U console, there is Angry Birds Star Wars and Trilogy, Assassin’s Creed, Batman and FIFA 13. In PlayStation 4, there is Backgammon Blitz, Battlefield 4, Drive-Club, EA Sports UFC and FIFA 14. And in Xbox One there is The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Battlefield 4, Angry Birds Star Wars, Assassin’s Creed IV, EA Sports UFC and FIFA 14. These are just but a few of the favorite games across the three generation eight platforms and it is clear to see how they are closely related (Poh, 2011).
With technological advancements, the consoles are not the only platforms with which to interact with the eighth generation computer games. There are many computer based games that are installed in personal computers and played with the help of the keyboard, mouse and the monitor. More so, with the advancement in cellular technology, the mobile phones are also a common device for interacting with computer games. As a result, there are small and portable game consoles too that come ready with their output screens, such as the Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation Vita, thus not requiring a connection to TV Sets or computer screens (TV Tropes, 2013). In short, the level of technology exhibited by the current gaming platforms, as well as the kind of computer games hosted by these platforms, surely attains the class to deserve the eighth generation status.
